Position Focus:
The Deputy Director, Office of Animal Research Support (OARS) is responsible for leading and operational management of pre- and post-approval teams within OARS, and is responsible for independently identifying and resolving administrative and program compliance issues regarding OARS and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The position works closely with the Director and other animal program leadership, IACUC members, and others in the University research community to ensure operational efficiency of OARS, customer support of scientists, and compliance with laws, regulations, standards, and institutional requirements that impact animal research. In the performance of duties, the position will: refine standard operating procedures to operationalize OARS-related initiatives; review interpret protocol-related data to maintain quality assurance; work closely with the Director to develop strategies to enable OARS, the IACUC, and the animal research community to successfully adapt to changes; and serve as a resource to the University community regarding animal research matters.

• Leads and manages operational matters of OARS, ensuring operational efficiency. This includes leading, managing, and advising on the following: OARS and cross-office initiatives, projects, and requests for assistance by the University community; delivery of day-to-day service levels, customer experience, and quality measures; change management within OARS; collaborations with other business units (e.g. Yale Animal Resource Center, Environmental Health and Safety); operational effectiveness and strategies to ensure quality and efficiency, operational opportunities, and continuous quality improvement; and verifying that institutional requirements have been satisfied.
• Leads, manages, and advises on quality matters (quality control, quality assurance, and quality improvement) to assure compliance with laws, regulations, and standards related to the conduct of animal research. This includes leading, managing, and advising on the following: OARS pre-approval data quality; post-approval monitoring of research studies and other quality improvement activities; and reporting and tracking of OARS-related audit and monitoring findings and reports requested from sponsors, federal agencies, and other oversight bodies.
• Leads, manages, and advises on providing excellent customer service to the animal research community, setting reasonable customer satisfaction goals, and motivating the pre- and post-approval monitoring teams to meet these goals on a consistent basis.
• Leads, manages, and advises on compliance matters as assigned. This includes: serving as a resource regarding applicable laws, regulations, and standards governing animal research; providing advice and ensuring the efficient review, identification, and resolution of regulatory issues with a focus on compliance while meeting customer service expectations; animal research oversight activities (e.g., internal and external reviews, audits, and inspections); and delivering relevant training.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Advanced degree preferred with 9 years of relevant experience in research administration and 5 years’ prior experience in operational and team management; Certified Professional in IACUC Administration or other relevant certification; Expertise with animal research regulations and guidance; Project, Quality, or Lean management certification.
